Vascular Biology 2021: Annual meeting of the the North American Vascular Biology Organization (NAVBO)
Biography
Overview
Vascular Biology 2021 features the Developmental Vascular Biology and Genetics Workshop and the Vascular Matrix Biology and Bioengineering Workshop with guest society: Microcirculatory Society October 24-28, 2021 Asilomar Conference Grounds, Pacific Grove, Monterey, California Principal Investigator: Courtney T. Griffin Project Summary/Abstract The vascular biology field is undergoing a transformation as new techniques and discoveries are revealing the extent of vascular diversity within organisms. Vascular biologists have a growing appreciation for how vessel structure and function can vary in different organs, developmental stages, and disease contexts and how this variation can impact therapeutic strategies for tackling a wide range of pathologies. Two important factors that contribute to vascular diversity are (1) the genetic patterning of developing vessels, and (2) the surrounding environment in which vessels grow and are maintained. Vascular Biology 2021?the annual meeting of the North American Vascular Biology Organization (NAVBO)?will provide a forum for in-depth exploration of these factors by combining its ninth Developmental Vascular Biology and Genetics Workshop with its eighth Vascular Matrix Biology and Bioengineering Workshop. These Workshops have been successfully paired in the past, and they provide exciting opportunities for vascular biologists with different expertise to appreciate the crossover and combined strengths of their research. In addition, Vascular Biology 2021 will host the Microcirculatory Society (MCS) as its guest, because the physiological perspective of MCS members has been shown in past meetings to complement and enhance the genetic and bioengineering approaches of Workshop participants. Therefore, the goal of Vascular Biology 2021 is to bring together scientists focused on developmental, genetic, matrix, bioengineering, and microcirculatory aspects of the vasculature so that their crosstalk can progress the field's understanding of vascular development, diversity, and therapeutic potential. Vascular Biology 2021 will be an international meeting that draws researchers from academia, industry, and government and that incorporates both trainees and established scientists. The meeting will be held at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, CA, from October 24-28, 2021. The roster of organizers and of invited speakers provides a diverse and inclusive face to the meeting, with women, junior faculty, and other underrepresented groups included. In addition, more speakers will be selected from abstract submissions than at past versions of these Workshops to give trainees and junior faculty additional chances for presentations. Each Workshop will host concurrent sessions, while four joint sessions will unify all meeting participants in one room. Additional opportunities for formal and informal interactions will occur at poster sessions, moderator-led discussions, group meals, a hands-on ?boot camp? on single-cell analyses, a nano-talks session, and a conference-wide reception. Altogether, Vascular Biology 2021 will serve as a nexus for scientists of diverse stages, backgrounds, and perspectives to come together for four days of intensive discussion and interaction that will foster new ideas and collaborations to advance the vascular biology field and the NHLBI mission.
